“Penduka! Empowered women working for a better future” PENDUKA is a non-governmental development organisation working with women in Namibia. In the Oshiwambo and Otjiherero languages the word Penduka means "Wake Up!" Through our programme we encourage and support women throughout the country to take charge of their lives.
Penduka works with the women of Katutura and other communities to develop livelihoods and a better quality of life through a focus on work, trust, mutual care and support. It pays particular attention to women who are disadvantaged through poverty, disability, ill-health or lack of education. It empowers them to develop their skills and talents and markets these to the international and national community through crafts and community based tourism. It seeks to deliver this mission through: · Crafts production and sales - wholesale and retail, international and national · Tourist and conference accommodation with restaurant and some cultural activities · Managing the TB control programme for Khomas · Training The unifying theme of these programmes is a community self-help philosophy. Women, particularly those with disability, are able to produce and sell crafts and offer tourists insight into their lives. |
