At the DOT points health education sessions are given to the TB patients. Different subjects are discussed to provide the patients with health information. The sessions are run by the Field Promoters and DOTS treatment supporters and usually take about 1 hour, but that depends on the participation and interaction from the patients. The programme is designed to take place over an 8 week period with 2 sessions taking place every week. The sessions are repeated after 8 weeks, so that all patients have an opportunity to attend all the sessions. Different subjects are discussed such as the ins and outs of TB (symptoms, treatment, diagnosis, and medicine), healthy diets and the importance of healthy food and the risk of infecting others. HIV/AIDS is also discussed during these sessions, as is the relationship between HIV/AIDS and TB. Personal and Household Hygiene are among other subjects discussed. Lastly, Penduka also tries to provide the patients with health information by playing games. Examples are board games and card plays. During these games the most important topics relating to HIV/AIDS and TB are discussed in an interactive way. Penduka Oshoto Counselling Centre Oshoto means "a place of discussion" in both the Oshiwambo and Herero languages. The Oshoto Counselling Centre is an initiative of Penduka and it's partners due to an increase in the social and emotional problems being experienced by TB/HIV/AIDS patients under the care of the Penduka TB PRogramme. The aim of the Centre is to:
As well as offering a service to TB/HIV/AIDS patients, Oshoto wishes to make the counselling services accessible to other vulnerable members of the community including children and sexually abused women. |
